VeryDarkMan: Two-Year Timeline Of Legal Troubles
By Gideon Ayeni

Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known online as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has become one of Nigeria’s most controversial and outspoken social media figures.
Known for his bold activism, exposés, and relentless criticism of influential individuals and institutions, Verydarkman has spent the last two years entangled in a series of arrests, legal battles, and public confrontations with authorities.
Below is a comprehensive timeline chronicling his repeated run-ins with the law—from cyberbullying allegations to confrontations with the EFCC and police.
- March 2024 – Arrest for Cyberbullying and Cyberstalking
VDM was first arrested in March 2024 over allegations of cyberbullying and cyberstalking. The charges were linked to a series of Instagram videos in which he accused several Nollywood actresses and public figures of immoral conduct. He pleaded not guilty, was remanded in police custody for nearly two weeks, and was granted bail with a hearing scheduled for May 29, 2024.
- June 30, 2024 – Defamation Allegations Lead to Abuja Arrest
On June 30, 2024, the Nigerian Police apprehended VDM at his Abuja residence following a defamation complaint. According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, the case stemmed from a viral video in which VDM exposed a man allegedly involved in defrauding a Nigerian in the diaspora. He was released shortly after.
- September 25, 2024 – EFCC Invitation Over Alleged Bribery Claims
VDM again found himself in the EFCC’s spotlight after he leaked an audio clip purportedly featuring controversial crossdresser Bobrisky, who allegedly claimed to have bribed EFCC officials with N15 million to quash money laundering charges. The commission invited both VDM and Bobrisky for questioning.
- February 27, 2025 – Accuses EFCC of Plotting His Arrest
In February 2025, VDM raised the alarm that the EFCC was planning his arrest in retaliation for his sustained online criticism of EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede. He claimed that a lawyer and a popular social media influencer had submitted photos and clips showing him allegedly spraying money at an event—evidence he believed would be used against him.
- March 13, 2025 – Court Issues Arrest Warrant in Mercy Chinwo Case
The Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, issued a bench warrant for VDM’s arrest after he failed to appear in a defamation case brought by gospel singer Mercy Chinwo. VDM had accused her of siphoning $345,000 allegedly tied to her former record label boss. The court ordered police to arrest and present him in court.
- May 2, 2025 – Fresh Arrest After Visit to GTBank Branch
On May 2, 2025, VDM was once again arrested, this time under dramatic circumstances. He had gone to a GTBank branch in Abuja to file a complaint regarding unauthorized deductions from his mother’s account. Moments after exiting the bank, he was picked up by masked individuals suspected to be operatives from either the EFCC or the Department of State Services (DSS). The exact nature of the latest allegations is still unclear, but it is believed to be linked to fresh cyberstalking claims.
While critics accuse him of recklessness and defamation, supporters see him as a rare voice of truth in a country where accountability is often lacking. As legal battles continue to mount, one question remains: is Nigeria silencing a troublemaker—or silencing a whistleblower?
