Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has officially banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in Maiduguri and surrounding areas, linking it to the growing wave of crime, radicalism, and antisocial behaviour in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration of a newly reconstituted committee set up to clamp down on illegal hotels, brothels, and criminal hideouts, Governor Zulum accused both serving and retired security personnel of playing a role in the breakdown of law and order in the region. He alleged that some military and paramilitary officials have actively contributed to rising cases of prostitution, cultism, and drug abuse, which he believes are fuelling terrorism and general insecurity in Borno.

“No one is above the law—whether dismissed or serving security officers,” Zulum warned. “If we truly want to end insurgency and criminality in Borno, everyone must be held accountable.”

According to the governor, the decision to ban alcohol stems from the increasing spate of violence among rival groups, cult clashes, theft, and public unrest, which have led to loss of lives and property in recent months.

The new enforcement committee is composed of personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), all working together for a unified crackdown on vice-related activities in the state.

One of the co-chairs of the committee admitted that Maiduguri faces serious security challenges and vowed that the team would act swiftly to implement the governor’s directive and restore public order.
