Senator Akpabio responds to Peter Obi’s criticism, urging him to resolve Labour Party issues before pursuing the presidency, stressing that internal unity is crucial before tackling national challenges.

Senator Godswill Akpabio has responded to Peter Obi’s comments about the state of Nigeria, offering advice on what Obi must do to have a chance at defeating President Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Obi had criticized the government, claiming the sacrifices of past leaders like General Gowon and former President Jonathan were in vain. He also noted the absence of protests after recent fuel price hikes, unlike during Jonathan’s administration.

In his response, Akpabio emphasized that before aiming for the presidency, Obi must first resolve issues within his own party. Speaking at a tribute for the late Chief Edwin Clark, Akpabio told Obi, “If you cannot resolve the crisis in your Labour Party, how can you solve the crisis of Boko Haram or other major national issues?” He stressed that aspiring leaders should focus on internal party unity before addressing national problems.

Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, also took the opportunity to highlight his own leadership accomplishments. He proudly spoke about the development projects he initiated, such as dualized roads, international hospitals, and free education programs. He added, “I also worked towards religious unity by sponsoring over 5,800 Muslims and over 12,000 to 15,000 Christians on pilgrimages to Rome and Jerusalem.”

In addition, Akpabio addressed the role of social media in political discourse. He acknowledged its potential to be a powerful communication tool but warned about its tendency to sow division among the people due to lack of regulation.

Akpabio concluded by urging Obi and other presidential hopefuls to first focus on resolving internal party issues before pursuing their national aspirations. “The focus should be on resolving party issues first. Only then can anyone truly move forward with their national aspirations,” he said.
