NAFDAC Alcoholic Drinks Factory

NAFDAC has raided a factory in Lagos producing counterfeit alcoholic beverages, arresting Madu Abuchi Simon, and seizing over ₦114 million worth of fake drinks, leading to an ongoing investigation.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently raided a factory in Lagos State where counterfeit alcoholic drinks were being produced and distributed for public consumption.

The operation led to the arrest of Madu Abuchi Simon, who was accused of counterfeiting popular alcoholic brands such as Hennessy, William Lawson, Baileys, Martell, St. Remy, and Jameson.

During the raid, NAFDAC officials discovered expired Amarula cream liquor, empty branded bottles and cartons, labels, stoves, buckets, cotton wool, and a purple chemical believed to be used for cleaning and reusing bottles. Simon allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was captured by the authorities.

The agency also reported that over 100 cartons of adulterated alcoholic beverages, valued at more than ₦114 million, were seized. The factory has been shut down pending further investigations. NAFDAC has since urged the public to only purchase alcoholic products from reliable vendors and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest office.

In other news, the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs has launched investigative hearings to probe possible violations of the Federal Character principle by several Nigerian ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). This follows a motion presented in March 2025 by Senator Osita Ngwu from Enugu West, which the Senate adopted.

The motion, titled “Urgent need to address systemic abuse and ineffective implementation of the Federal Character Principle,” pointed out ongoing non-compliance within many federal bodies. The Senate’s resolution has identified several government agencies that may be violating Sections 14(3) and 14(4) of the 1999 Constitution, which aim to ensure equitable representation in governance.

Among the institutions being investigated are the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), NAFDAC, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), National Pension Commission (PENCOM), Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), National Library of Nigeria (NLN), Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), and the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA). These agencies are accused of disregarding constitutional requirements meant to ensure fair representation.

On May 6, 2025, Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh, Chairman of the Committee, confirmed that the panel would examine irregularities in recruitment and infrastructure distribution across Nigeria. He stated that the findings of the investigation would be submitted to the full Senate within three months. The hearings are scheduled to begin on May 7, 2025, at the Equal Opportunities Hearing Room 211 in the Senate Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja. All implicated agencies have been formally invited to participate in the hearings, where they are expected to present required documents.
