U.S. President Donald Trump has hailed the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new head of the Catholic Church, calling it a “proud and historic moment” for the United States.

Taking to his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump congratulated the newly elected pontiff, who has become the first American in history to ascend to the papacy.

“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country,” Trump wrote.

Prevost, 69, was elected by the College of Cardinals on Thursday, May 8, 2025, after a relatively swift conclave. He chose the papal name Pope Leo XIV and made his first public appearance from the iconic central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, addressing a massive crowd of worshippers in Italian.

Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is known for his moderate theological views has long been considered a bridge-builder within the Church. He had a strong working relationship with his predecessor, Pope Francis, especially during his time leading the powerful Vatican office responsible for bishop appointments.

His election has been described as both symbolic and groundbreaking, reflecting a shift in the Church’s global outlook. Many political and religious leaders across the world have extended congratulations, with Trump among the first high-profile Americans to publicly celebrate the milestone.
