Former Senate President and ex-Kwara State Governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has been appointed to head a high-powered reconciliation committee as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ramps up efforts to address its internal crises ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Saraki’s emergence followed a crucial meeting of the PDP Governors Forum held in Abuja on Sunday, which brought together serving and former governors, party leaders, and members of the National Working Committee to chart a path toward party unity and revival.

Addressing journalists after the closed-door meeting, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, disclosed that Saraki will lead a seven-member team tasked with reaching out to aggrieved members and ensuring swift reconciliation ahead of the party’s upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and early convention.

“We set up a committee of seven, headed by His Excellency, the former Senate President and former Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki, to ensure that reconciliation and outreach are made quickly,” Governor Mohammed said. “We want a rancour-free and harmonious NEC and convention.”

The move comes amid mounting concern over deepening divisions within the party and a fresh wave of defections in recent months. Mohammed acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence that the party would emerge stronger from its internal struggles.

“Rather than diminishing and weakening us, this is making us stronger,” he stated. “We will ensure that party chapters with a strong history and structure are not left behind. Our goal is to provide a level playing field so that PDP can produce the next set of governors and leaders by the grace of God.”

The Bauchi governor also hinted at possible interference from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting that external forces may be exploiting PDP’s internal issues.

“We wouldn’t want to blame the APC for causing crisis, but they are likely to be the ones,” he said cautiously.

The meeting also addressed preparations for the NEC meeting scheduled for April 27 and a planned early convention in August. Party leaders emphasized the importance of resolving “existential issues,” mending fences, and presenting a united front as 2027 approaches.

With Saraki now at the helm of reconciliation efforts, stakeholders are watching closely to see if the PDP can restore internal cohesion and mount a credible challenge in the next election cycle.
