Premier League Clubs Face New Transfer Time Limit
By Benjamin Abioye

Premier League and EFL clubs will now face a 7pm transfer deadline, a change meant to reduce late-night work hours but one that raises concerns among some officials.
The football transfer deadline in England will now close earlier than before. Instead of ending at 11pm, it will now close at 7pm. Clubs have been told that this change will apply to the upcoming summer transfer windows.
According to officials, the decision was made with support from both the Premier League and the English Football League. The aim is to create a more regular work schedule for staff who often stay at their desks late into the night.
“Today, people working on transfers can be stuck at work well past midnight,” one insider said.
However, not everyone agrees with the change. Some club officials believe this earlier deadline may bring new problems. One concern is that clubs in other countries may still be allowed to make transfers after the English window closes. This could leave English teams at a disadvantage.
In reality, many deals are done in the final hours of the window. “Every hour counts,” one club official explained. “You need all the time you can get.”
This summer, there will be two transfer windows due to FIFA’s updated Club World Cup schedule. The first will be from June 1 to June 10. The second will run from June 16 to September 1. Officials say the longer window was also a reason for the earlier deadline.
During the winter, the transfer period will run from January 1 to February 2. So far, no final decision has been made about changing the winter deadline.
Even with the 7pm deadline, clubs will still get a two-hour period afterward to complete deals. But all paperwork must reach the Football Association by 7pm. For international signings, the same rule applies, though teams will have until midnight to meet FIFA’s requirements.
Some other European leagues are also thinking about moving their deadline earlier.
In March, it was shared that Premier League clubs were asking for a rule change. They want to be allowed to loan their young players to lower-league clubs even outside the transfer window. Talks on that are still ongoing.
