Jealous Mother Stabs Son To Death Over Ex-Partner’s New Relationship

A 43-year-old mother allegedly stabbed her young son to death after becoming distressed over her ex-partner’s new relationship, according to court proceedings.

A woman fatally stabbed her four-year-old son after becoming distressed about her former partner’s new relationship, a court has heard.

Keziah Macharia, 43, is accused of killing her son, Kobi Dooly-Macharia, around December 20, 2023. However, she has been declared unfit to stand trial.

The court was told that police found Kobi unresponsive in his cot, showing signs of multiple stab wounds and strangulation. The discovery was made at Macharia’s flat in Hackney, London.

Justice Thornton explained that a “fact-finding hearing” would determine whether Macharia caused the child’s death, but the jury would not be asked to consider whether she was guilty of murder. “You are not to consider her state of mind and whether she is at fault,” she said.

Prosecutor Mukul Chawla KC described the relationship between Macharia and Ben Dooly, which began in 2018. Their son Kobi was born in 2019. The couple initially lived together but separated after Kobi’s birth. Mr. Dooly continued to visit the flat a few times a week until he began a new relationship with Sasha Sasheva.

The court heard that Macharia became very upset over Kobi spending time with Ms Sasheva. In response to messages Macharia sent, Ms Sasheva blocked her on her phone and social media.

Mr. Dooly last saw his son alive during a school nativity play the day before the tragic event. CCTV footage showed Macharia picking up Kobi from school that day. “You see nothing of distress or anything out of the ordinary in terms of her demeanour,” Mr. Chawla noted.

At some point that evening, Macharia began drinking, though the exact time and amount of alcohol consumed were unclear. Later that night, she sent several disturbing messages. At 10:42 p.m., she messaged Mr. Dooly:
“Hi Ben, good luck with the biteme-cups five days before Xmas! I hope you and Sasha enjoy your lives together. I can’t live knowing that she’ll have the same surname as my son Kobi, and I will not be in your life anymore. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Goodbye x”

She also messaged Ms Sasheva, blaming her: “This is all your fault” and “You will never have the same surname as my son.”

Just minutes later, she messaged Mr. Dooly again: “Kobi is dead” followed by “You can thank Sasha for that.” At 10:49 p.m., she also texted “Kobi is dead” to a group chat recently created by another woman, Reena Life.

Police arrived at Macharia’s home around 10:59 p.m. and tried to enter for several minutes without a response. While inside, officers found Macharia sitting on the living room floor with bloodstained clothes. She moved to her knees as police approached. A knife was seen behind her.

When asked, “Who did this?”, Mr. Chawla said Macharia placed her hand on her chest to indicate responsibility. Officers noted that she admitted trying to overdose and harm herself.

Kobi was found lifeless in his cot beside a double bed. He was pronounced dead just after midnight on December 21, 2023.

Following her arrest, Macharia was taken to the police station. Mr. Chawla described her as emotionally flat, sometimes sobbing. “She told officers repeatedly she just wanted her baby back, and she just wanted to see his sweet face,” he said.

The only injuries observed on Macharia were bruises, likely from the handcuffs used during her arrest.
