Cleric, Couple Jailed Over ₦1,500 Eyeglasses Dowry
By Benjamin Abioye

A Kano groom has given ₦1,500 eyeglasses as dowry, sparking public reaction and leading to legal consequences for those involved.
A wedding in Gamadan village, located in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, has stirred public debate due to the groom’s unconventional choice of dowry.
Mustapha, the groom, presented a pair of eyeglasses worth N1,500 as the bride price, a gesture that has now resulted in legal consequences for those involved in the ceremony.
The marriage took place quietly with only five individuals in attendance — the groom, the bride, one representative each for both families, and an Islamic cleric who officiated the union. Despite its simplicity, the nature of the dowry raised concerns that led to their arraignment before a Magistrate Court in Kura. The presiding judge, Muhammad Isah, ordered that all five be remanded while the court considers the case.
During questioning, the prosecuting officer requested more time for the court to issue a verdict, leading to the temporary detention of the individuals involved.
Speaking in his defense, Mustapha explained that he had consulted multiple religious scholars before proceeding with the marriage. “We consulted two clerics who said the marriage was not valid, but another cleric affirmed it, especially since the bride’s representative was present and accepted the eyeglasses as dowry,” he said. He further encouraged young people to trust in destiny, adding, “Everyone has their own fate, and no one can go against the will of God.”
This incident closely mirrors another recent case in the state where a man offered a mobile phone worth N5,000 as dowry. In that situation, a Sharia court sentenced the couple to one month of community service. The groom was directed to sweep the central mosque, while the bride was assigned to clean a local Quranic school.
These cases have sparked ongoing discussions around cultural, religious, and legal expectations surrounding marriage practices in the region.
