A Nigerian assistant surgeon has created a wave of reactions online after posting a photo showing her using a phone torchlight during a surgical procedure due to power outage.

The incident involving the Nigerian surgeon was brought to light on X (formerly Twitter) by the user @mama_rokky, who proudly shared her experience in the operating room. “I WAS THE ASSISTANT SURGEON TODAY!!” she wrote, accompanying the post with a photo capturing a medical procedure—believed to be on an animal—in which she appeared to be assisting with suturing.

What stood out in the image and quickly drew attention was the use of a phone’s flashlight to provide illumination during the surgery, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing healthcare facilities in parts of Nigeria.

As the post gained traction, the self acclaimed Nigerian assistant surgeon responded to surprised comments, saying, “This is Nigeria! I don’t know why most of you are surprised!”

The image has since gone viral, with a mix of admiration for the resilience of Nigerian surgeons and deep concern over the state of healthcare infrastructure in the country. Many users commended her dedication, while others questioned why such critical procedures are still being carried out without reliable electricity or proper backup systems.
