Former presidential candidate and Labour Party chieftain, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the tragic injury sustained by Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, while playing for Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Obi described Awoniyi as a “resilient son of the soil” whose unrelenting spirit reflects the strength and commitment of the Nigerian people.

Awoniyi reportedly suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with the goalpost during a league match. Despite the severity of the injury, he continued playing before eventually undergoing emergency surgery. He is currently said to be in an induced coma, according to updates making rounds on social media.

Reacting to the situation, Obi wrote:
“It is both painful and telling that, even after colliding with the goalpost and sustaining what has now been revealed as a ruptured intestine, he pressed on—a testament to the Nigerian spirit: strong, unyielding, and ever-committed.”

Obi called on the Nigerian government, the football community, and fellow citizens to rally around the footballer and his family during this difficult time, urging prayers and moral support for the 26-year-old athlete.

“Let us not take this lightly. We must appreciate and celebrate such young men who continue to lift our flag high, even at great personal risk,” he said.

He further emphasized the need to build a nation where the sacrifices and patriotism of citizens, especially sportsmen and women, are not ignored but met with proper care, recognition, and sustained support.

“May he recover fully and return stronger. And may we build a country where such sacrifice is not in vain,” Obi concluded.

Taiwo Awoniyi has become a key figure for both club and country in recent years, earning praise for his work ethic, humility, and dedication on and off the pitch. His condition continues to draw concern across the Nigerian football community and beyond.
