Student Died Football Match

Nwachukwu Omiko, a final-year Mechanical Engineering student at Michael Okpara University, tragically collapsed and died during a casual football match.

A sad event occurred at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, when a final-year student collapsed and died during a football game.

The student, Nwachukwu Omiko, was studying Mechanical Engineering and was in his final year at the university. He reportedly fell to the ground while playing a friendly match with other students on the school’s football field on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

His friends quickly tried to revive him on the pitch but couldn’t. He was then taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia. Unfortunately, doctors confirmed that he was already dead when he arrived at the hospital.

The school’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Ubadire Agua, spoke about the heartbreaking situation, describing it as a “painful loss” despite the efforts made to save the student’s life.

In a statement issued after the tragedy, Agua advised all students to visit the university’s health center for medical checks when school resumes. He also warned against engaging in stressful physical activities, especially for those who have existing health issues.

“The Vice-Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, extends the deep regrets and condolences of the university to the parents and family of Mr Omiko, as well as his colleagues in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology,” the statement added.
