Video: Martell Ambassador, Davido Says He Has Chased Out Of Nigeria
By Benjamin Abioye

Nigerian singer Davido has stirred online debate after claiming credit for Martell’s market growth in Nigeria and saying Hennessy is no longer relevant.
Nigerian musician Davido has made a bold claim regarding his influence in the alcoholic beverage industry in Africa.
In an interview, the singer revealed that his partnership with Martell, a premium cognac brand, significantly boosted the company’s presence across Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
Davido, who currently serves as Martell’s brand ambassador, stated that his efforts have helped the company achieve substantial growth on the continent. “When Martell came, I grew Martell’s GDP in Africa over 22%. That’s one individual doing that. That’s not like 10 artistes doing that,” he said confidently.
The singer went further to assert that his endorsement practically forced Hennessy, a rival cognac brand, out of the Nigerian market. “Basically, I chased Hennessy out of Nigeria. Go to the club, it’s hard to see a Hennessy bottle. It’s all Martell,” he added.
He also recounted how Martell’s executives acknowledged his impact. “I got called by the boss; he flew me out on the Martell Jet to Cognac in France and he sat me down and we structured the whole deal. They gave me my own bottle. I get a percentage on a bottle now. There’s influence,” Davido said.
As expected, Davido’s claims have sparked a wide range of reactions online, with opinions divided.
Some fans and observers praised him for his branding power. @michaelwale_ commented, “That’s real influence right there. It’s safe to say Hennessy is for brokies,” while @AfrokonnectNG agreed, saying, “He is not lying though, Martell is everywhere now because of Davido.”
Another user, @Ilychapo, supported the claim, tweeting, “Not gonna lie, Davido’s influence is the reason why Martell is my favorite drink at the moment, used to be Henny, he is saying the truth.”
However, others were more skeptical. @iamcurious00 argued, “Na because Hennessy cost pass Martell. He no chase anything, the economy touch everybody.” @logicoversentiments was even more blunt, saying, “Blatant lies. Which Hennessy you chase comot Naija?”
A few went as far as accusing Davido of exaggeration. @_dchairman mocked, “Otunba lamba don start again. Very soon he go say na him comot Sportybet and introduced Stake.” @NuJhayhne questioned his honesty, asking, “Must he always lie to prove a point? Like wetin be this bros gain as he dey always drop lamba?”
Others tried to find a middle ground. @Ab85Ab_ admitted, “I would agree with him, he didn’t really chase Hennessy out but it’s hard to see Hennessy now unlike before. I agree 40% with him.”
Despite the polarizing feedback, one thing remains clear—Davido’s marketing reach continues to draw attention, whether met with applause or raised eyebrows.
