Couple Fake Wedding

A young couple has pulled off a fake wedding by selling N5 million worth of aso ebi to friends, despite having no intention of holding any actual marriage ceremony.

A young couple has stirred public outrage in Ibadan after allegedly faking a wedding to defraud friends and family of over N5 million through the sale of aso ebi.

The pair, who are reportedly not married but simply in a relationship, were exposed in a viral video that showed them sitting on the ground being questioned in front of Agidigbo FM, a popular radio station in Ibadan.

According to their confession during questioning, they conspired to stage a fake wedding and created a WhatsApp group where they invited about 50 friends. Each person was asked to purchase aso ebi (ceremonial clothing) at N50,000. Many people made payments, and in total, the duo collected around N5 million.

When asked what they did with the money, the man admitted to using about N3 million to buy a motorcycle, while the lady said, “Emi ti fowo si shop now,” meaning she used her N2 million share to open a shop. The clothes were reportedly packaged in branded bags and distributed, but there was no actual wedding ceremony.

Some of the people who bought the aso ebi were visibly angry and reportedly attempted to attack the couple but were held back by bystanders.

The incident has sparked heated reactions online. While many expressed shock and disappointment, others found humor in the situation or even praised the couple’s ingenuity.

One user, @Walters69081013, wrote, “I beg they should leave them. Smart people. This wicked people can only come to your aid during wedding or burial. They put the money into what will generate money for them. Tell the people to keep the clothes till when you guys are ready. Clothes no dey spoil!”

Another, @PrinceAdewale35018792, criticized the radio station saying, “Why is Agidigbo FM parading suspects? Is this a police station or a court? This arrogation of authority and stupidity shouldn’t have a place in our country.”

Others expressed disbelief and accused the couple of creating viral content. @Ogaborpikin commented, “Everything na content online now. Looking at the guy’s face, you go know say na content for entertainment.”

But not everyone found it amusing. @m_kwanser wrote, “I have said it before and will still repeat, Yoruba no get conscience o. When their eye red, they do the unthinkable.”

The bizarre incident has left many asking whether this is just a new wave of online scams disguised as celebrations—or a reflection of how far some are willing to go to raise money.

The authorities are yet to confirm if any legal steps have been taken against the couple.
