AFCON Champion Who Tamed Nigeria Dies At 68
By Benjamin Abioye

Emmanuel Kunde, a legendary Cameroonian footballer, has passed away at the age of 68, leaving behind a lasting legacy in African and global football history.
The football world in Africa is mourning the loss of Emmanuel Kunde, a famous former defender from Cameroon. He passed away in his sleep at the age of 68.
Kunde was a major part of Cameroon’s football success in the 1980s who in that period tamed Nigeria’s Super Eagles. He helped his country win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1984 and again in 1988. He also played in two FIFA World Cups — in 1982 and 1990.
Reports say that Emmanuel Kunde died on the night of Thursday, May 15. His body has been taken to the Yaounde Central Hospital mortuary, and his family is expected to give more details later.
Kunde was more than just a football player. He was seen as a strong leader, a smart defender, and one of Africa’s best football talents. He played both as a central defender and a defensive midfielder, and he was known for scoring goals even though he was not a forward. In fact, he is among the top 10 goal scorers in Cameroon’s football history, which is unusual for a defender.
His efforts helped Cameroon dominate African football in the 1980s. His strength, leadership, and skill were key to the national team’s victories. During the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Kunde was part of the team that made history by reaching the quarter-finals — the first African team to do so. This achievement helped change how the world viewed African football.
Samuel Eto’o, the President of the Cameroon Football Association and a former star himself, shared his grief on Instagram. He wrote a touching message in honor of Emmanuel Kunde.
After retiring from playing, Kunde continued to contribute to the game. He coached several clubs, including PWD Bamenda, Canon Yaounde, and US Bitam. Through coaching, he passed on his knowledge to younger players and stayed close to the sport he loved.
In another sad story, South African football also lost a player recently. A second-division footballer collapsed and died during a match between Durban FC and Milford FC. The game had to be stopped in the second half. The player’s death shocked fans and brought more sorrow to the African football community.
