Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has issued a stern warning to members of his cabinet, cautioning commissioners and special advisers against acts of indolence and insubordination during official functions.

Speaking at a public event, Governor Eno made it clear that any official found displaying nonchalance or disrespect for protocol will be immediately removed from office, regardless of their gender or influence.

GWG.ng reports that the warning came after Governor Eno sacked the cabinet he inherited from his predecessor and made his own choice of cabinet officers.

It also follows reports that some cabinet members have been shirking their responsibilities, often citing inadequate funding as an excuse. These officials have reportedly resorted to using the local phrase “mkpo ibaha”—translated as “there’s nothing in government”—to justify their lack of commitment.

However, the governor dismissed these excuses, urged dissatisfied cabinet members to either resign voluntarily or face expulsion.

Tensions came to a head during a recent outing when Governor Eno made an impromptu stop at another event on his return journey from an official function. Many commissioners, who had initially accompanied him, failed to follow through—an action he described as unacceptable and disrespectful.

“From now on, let everyone hear me clearly: if you hear that I’ve sacked a commissioner from your local government, it’s because of insubordination,” the governor stated firmly.

He emphasized that public office is a full-time responsibility that requires unwavering dedication. “The job you accepted under oath is a 24/7 job. If you can’t handle it, please step aside,” he said.

Describing his appointees as his “first eleven,” Governor Eno stressed that they were expected to accompany him to all official functions without needing a detailed itinerary.

“The fact that I am simple does not mean I am an appointed governor. I was elected by the people,” he declared. “You must go with me and return with me.”

He urged cabinet members to take their roles seriously, reminding them that the success of his administration’s ARISE Agenda depends on their commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

Recalling his own time in government, Governor Eno added, “I was a commissioner too, and I can’t remember a day I left my governor behind. If you’re busy with personal matters instead of state duties, get ready for a red card.”
