Popular Actor Laments Despite Success Of Yemi My Lover
By Benjamin Abioye

Yemi Ayebo, famously known as Yemi My Lover, has opened up about his financial struggles, saying he has suffered losses due to piracy and poor industry support.
Veteran Nollywood actor Yemi Ayebo, popularly known as ‘Yemi My Lover’, has appealed for help as he struggles financially.
The actor, who became famous for his 1993 movie ‘Yemi My Lover’, shared in a YouTube interview that he is currently broke and facing tough times.
Yemi explained that although the film was a huge success, especially in Yoruba-speaking areas of Nigeria, he didn’t earn much from it due to piracy.
“I wrote and produced the movie in 1993. The movie cut across Nigeria, especially in the Yoruba-speaking part of the country. But I didn’t make money from it because 90% of the money was gotten by piracy,” he said.
He added that he didn’t benefit from the movie financially because there was no social media back then to help him promote it. As a result, others copied and sold the film without his permission.
“I didn’t make profit from the film because there was no social media, so I don’t have opportunity to promote it widely. As a result of this, the movie was pirated, and the marketers waged war against me for handling the marketing myself. It was distributed illegally, and people made profit from it,” he added.
Yemi also shared that this issue marked the beginning of his financial problems.
“That marked the beginning of my problems. I’m broke right now. The industry is about connections, I need more connections to get back on my feet,” he pleaded.
The actor called on his fellow actors and people in the industry to support him so he can recover and rebuild his career.
