Trump Sets Up Peace Talks With Putin To End Ukraine Conflict
By Benjamin Abioye

President Donald Trump has announced plans to hold a crucial phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, followed by talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and key NATO leaders.
The U.S. President Donald Trump has announced he has scheduled a call with Putin to end the Ukraine war and will hold talks with Zelensky and NATO leaders next.
Trump said the conversation will focus on ending the ongoing “bloodbath” in Ukraine, where thousands of soldiers have died each week. He also mentioned he will talk to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and various NATO leaders afterward.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “Hopefully it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should never have happened, will end.”
The announcement comes shortly after Russian and Ukrainian officials met face-to-face for the first time in three years. Although their talks lasted less than two hours, they agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war. However, no ceasefire was reached. Moscow’s negotiators have demanded Ukraine withdraw troops from territories Russia claims, including some still fiercely contested on the battlefield. These demands include international recognition of Crimea and other regions as Russian, Ukrainian neutrality, and no foreign troops or weapons on Ukrainian soil.
A senior Ukrainian official told Reuters that Russia’s conditions go beyond a recent peace proposal drafted by the U.S., which suggested Ukraine should receive reparations—something Russia wants to reject. The peace summit in Istanbul was also marked by Vladimir Putin’s absence. Instead, he sent a delegation led by a former culture minister. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin would only meet Zelensky if there is a ceasefire framework and the successful prisoner exchange.

Trump expressed confidence that he could help end the conflict, citing his personal relationship with Putin. “I have a very good relationship with Putin. I think we’ll make a deal,” Trump told Fox News. “We have to get together, and I think we’ll probably schedule it up.” He added, “I’m tired of having other people go and meet and everything else. Nobody uses leverage better than me.” When asked if he would pressure Putin, Trump said, “I will, if we’re not going to make a deal. We’ll see what happens — that will be crushing for Russia.”
Meanwhile, Zelensky is expected to join the call with Trump after attending Pope Leo’s inaugural Mass at the Vatican. The ceremony in St. Peter’s Square will mark the start of the new pope’s leadership of 1.4 billion Catholics. A U.S. delegation, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, will also attend the Mass alongside Zelensky.
Despite the push for diplomacy, violence continues across Ukraine. After the Istanbul talks, Zelensky accused Russia of “deliberate killing of civilians” following a deadly drone strike that killed nine people in Sumy. Russian forces also claimed to have captured a village in Donetsk, while shelling in Kherson killed two civilians and injured thirteen. Airstrikes near the Russian border killed two more in Kharkiv and wounded at least twelve. On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, praising Washington’s positive role in restarting dialogue and agreeing to keep communication open.
