In a rare show of cordiality that has captivated Nigerians, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi were seen interacting warmly at the Vatican on Sunday during the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV.

GWG.ng reports that the Tinubu, Obi and Fayemi, often seen as ideological rivals, exchanged light-hearted banter in St. Peter’s Square, Rome, in an encounter that has sparked admiration and reflection back home.

According to a post by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the meeting began when Fayemi spotted President Tinubu seated among other world leaders. Turning to Obi, his fellow Papal Knight and staunch Catholic, Fayemi urged him to join him in paying homage to the Nigerian leader. Obi obliged.

As they approached, Fayemi playfully broke the ice, saying, “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”

President Tinubu, known for his sharp wit, quickly replied, “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”

The President’s quip drew laughter from Obi, who responded in kind, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”

The exchange, light and respectful, was a moment of unity that stood in contrast to the divisive rhetoric often echoed by their supporters online and in political circles. Both Obi and Fayemi, devout Catholics, are also recipients of Papal knighthood, which underscored the significance of their presence at the papal ceremony.

The meeting occurred during a high-profile event attended by several world leaders, including U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Yet for many Nigerians, the symbolic handshake and laughter among their own leaders was one of the standout moments.
