A video making rounds on X (formerly Twitter) has gone viral after a man publicly questioned the growing commercialization of church premises, particularly the presence of vendors selling shawarma, food and drinks within sacred grounds.

In the now-viral clip, the man visibly disturbed, filmed himself in what appeared to be a church courtyard, where vendors were seen selling shawarma, drinks, and other items. Speaking directly to the camera, he repeatedly asked, “Is this even right?” while pointing toward the stalls behind him.

His tone, a mix of confusion and disapproval, quickly resonated with viewers who shared mixed opinions on the matter.

Referencing scripture, the man draws parallels with a biblical account in which Jesus expelled traders from the temple. “There’s a page in the Bible when Jesus came to the temple and saw people selling things in His Father’s house. He drove them out,” he says, urging churches to reflect on the sanctity of their spaces.

He goes on to single out Catholic churches, claiming, “You Catholics are the ones I see doing this the most,” though he admits he has limited experience with other denominations. His remarks, though pointed, come across as a genuine plea for understanding rather than outright condemnation.

Throughout the video, the man continues to voice his concern, asking why a place of worship has seemingly been turned into a marketplace.

The video has since triggered a wave of reactions online. While some users agreed with the man’s sentiments, calling for a return to reverence within religious spaces, others defended the practice, arguing that vendors often provide refreshments during long services and events.

Read some netizens’ reactions below;

@lifeinsolace: Within the church premises, it is not right. The church, especially the Catholic church in Nigeria with all its collections at mass and rich members, should be feeding the members every Sunday, at least. Or the members should organise among themselves to feed the hungry among them after Sunday mass at least.

@sire_sammy: First approach would’ve been to take it up with the Parish Priest.

Nothing twitter people will do aside clicks and likes. Guess this was what man was looking for.

@videoiot: Yes it was never about God but for business..
The Hustle will continue..

@mazuchubbi: And you with earrings, is it right for you as a Christian to even step foot within the church premesis wearing earrings?

@kadmaye: Totally wrong

@mavrick: If not that Churches this days have lowered their standards, you shouldn’t be allowed in the church premises with those earrings

@entdaily001: They should sell outside the premises
