2025 Ballon d’Or

The 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony will make history on September 22 in Paris, as organisers introduce new categories and equal honours for male and female players.

The 2025 Ballon d’Or award ceremony is scheduled to hold on September 22, 2025, and it promises to be historic. For the first time, the same number of awards will be presented to both male and female footballers, a move hailed as a major step toward equality in the sport.

On May 19, the organisers announced the addition of new categories to better recognise achievements in women’s football. These include awards for Best Women’s Goalkeeper, Best Young Women’s Player, and Top Women’s Scorer, whether for club or national teams.

The event will take place at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, a venue that has hosted the ceremony in previous years. In total, there will be six awards each for men and women, alongside the Socrates Award, which is open to both genders and honours efforts that promote solidarity and social good.

The organisers confirmed that the list of nominees will be unveiled in early August.

Last year, the awards faced controversy after Real Madrid chose to boycott the ceremony. This came after their Brazilian star Vinicius Junior was overlooked for the Best Men’s Player award, which instead went to Rodri of Manchester City.

The Ballon d’Or is considered one of the most prestigious individual honours in football
, having been established in 1956 to celebrate outstanding performance on the field.

For the 2025 edition, the categories include:

– Men’s and Women’s Ballon d’Or
-Men’s and Women’s Kopa Trophy (best young player)
-Men’s and Women’s Yashin Trophy (best goalkeeper)
-Men’s and Women’s Gerd Müller Trophy (top scorer for club or country)
-Men’s and Women’s Johan Cruyff Trophy (best coach for club or country)
-Men’s and Women’s Club of the Year
-Socrates Award

These awards are jointly presented by L’Équipe Group and Peace and Sport, further emphasising the global recognition of the event.
