A soldier in Anambra was reportedly gunned down by suspected IPOB members after abandoning his duty post to attend a party in full military uniform.

A Nigerian soldier attached to Operation Udoka has been reportedly killed by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) after leaving his post without authorization to attend a party.

The incident happened on the evening of Saturday, May 18, 2025, at the Forward Operating Base in Uli, Anambra State.

According to The PUNCH, a military source said the soldier left his duty station to attend an event called the “Ladies’ Jamboree”—a strippers’ party—held at a nearby hotel. Shockingly, he was said to have attended in full military uniform.

“It was during a tactical operation that it was discovered the soldier was missing,” the source said. “He was later found to have sneaked out of the base without permission to attend a strippers’ party at a nearby hotel, in uniform. It was there that he was accosted and fatally shot by suspected IPOB/ESN fighters. His lifeless body, along with that of a baby, was later recovered at the scene by troops.

“His weapon has been retrieved and is currently in military custody.”

So far, no official statement has been released by the military authorities. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, and officials of Operation Udoka have not yet commented on the matter.

This tragic event adds to the growing list of security challenges in the southeastern region of the country. In a related development earlier in the week, gunmen reportedly clashed with security forces in Anambra, leading to the deaths of two suspects.

The gunmen, believed to be linked to IPOB, have been blamed for several attacks and acts of violence in the region. The group has also enforced sit-at-home orders across southeastern states every Monday in protest of the continued detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
