A 50-year-old man has been arrested and publicly interrogated in Bayelsa State after he was accused of defiling his 14-year-old niece, sparking outrage both offline and across Nigerian news and social media platforms.

A viral video posted on X (formerly Twitter) showed the suspect sitting on the floor in his underwear, his hands tied behind his back, as angry community members confronted him over the alleged crime.

The incident reportedly took place near the riverbank in the Swali Market area of Yenagoa, where his niece had been sent to collect snails from him.

According to voices heard in the clip, the assault allegedly occurred inside a local boat, a detail that further heightened public anger. In the footage, the man appeared visibly distressed and largely unresponsive, his body language betraying a sense of resignation and fear as he was questioned by members of the community.
