A disturbing video showing a man violently assaulting his wife with a bat in Abuja has gone viral, igniting widespread outrage and renewed calls for justice and police action.

A Nigerian human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, has called for urgent justice after a disturbing video surfaced online showing a woman being violently assaulted by her husband in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday night near Wumba 1 Transformer in the Apo Area 1 of the capital city. The video, which has since gone viral across Nigerian news and social media platforms, shows a man dragging his wife to the ground and repeatedly striking her with a table tennis bat. The woman is seen shielding her face on the ground as the blows land mostly on her arms.

According to Gwamnishu, the footage was sent to him to raise awareness about ongoing abuse in the woman’s marriage. He revealed that the victim has endured repeated episodes of violence but has not received adequate protection from law enforcement.

“The case was reported to the police, but each time, the man was released on bail,” Gwamnishu said. “The police often dismiss it as a family issue that should be settled at home.”

He further emphasized that while separation is not always encouraged, continued physical abuse should never be tolerated. “People try to discourage divorce, especially when love is involved, but when a man beats his wife mercilessly like this, separation is not only justified—it’s necessary.”

The video has triggered a strong response from Nigerians online, with many calling for the man’s immediate arrest and prosecution. While the majority condemned the act, a few controversial comments have also stirred debate.

One user wrote, “How can you do this to the mother of your children—someone you claim you love?” Another said, “No woman deserves this kind of treatment. Great men walk away from provocation, they don’t raise their hands.”

However, some users made remarks that sparked outrage. A commenter stated, “Most women are like children—they need discipline. But beating is just out of it.” Another said, “The man is disciplining her and you’re calling for justice?”

These comments were met with fierce backlash. A user responded angrily, “That’s a sick way to think. If she ‘doesn’t hear word’ you want to beat her ears off? That’s abuse, not correction.”

One user added, “If your wife disrespects you, leave. Don’t become a criminal. Domestic violence is never the answer.”

Some questioned the actions of the bystander filming the video instead of intervening or contacting the police. “Who’s the person recording when she could have called for help?” one user asked.

Another user summed up the prevailing sentiment: “This is painful to watch. If living with your spouse becomes unbearable, walk away. But never raise your hands.”

Many are now urging the police to take swift action, with several tagging official handles of the Nigerian Police and the FCT command. “He should be arrested and charged. This cannot be normalized,” read one of the many appeals.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official police statement confirming whether the man has been arrested or charged.
