Catholic Priest Slumps Playing Tennis, Dies

The Catholic community in Anambra State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Reverend Father Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who reportedly collapsed while playing lawn tennis on Monday, May 19, 2025.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of the day. The beloved priest was rushed to a nearby hospital after collapsing during the game, but all efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful.
Until his passing, Father Udogu served as the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish in Awka and also held the position of Dean of Awka Il Deanery under the Catholic Diocese of Awka. A dedicated and active figure in the diocese, he was widely respected for his spiritual leadership and community engagement.
Born on December 24, 1964, and ordained on August 19, 1995, Father Udogu had nearly 30 years of service in the Catholic Church. His death came as a shock to parishioners, colleagues, and church leaders alike.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Catholic Diocese of Awka confirmed the tragic news, stating that the priest slumped while engaged in a tennis match and passed away shortly after, despite receiving immediate medical attention.
The diocese extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, parishioners, and the broader Christian community mourning the sudden loss.
