Team Delta has climbed to the top of the medals table at the 2024 National Sports Festival, having secured key victories in Kung Fu and weightlifting competitions.

Team Delta has moved to the top of the medals table at the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

This comes just two days into the competition, as the team overtook early leaders, Team Cross River, with a strong start that included three gold medals and one silver.

Confidence Onyema led Delta’s rise by winning two gold medals in Kung Fu. In weightlifting, Favour Mike added another gold, while Edirin Agha secured a silver medal, boosting the team’s total.

Team Cross River, which was initially leading, now sits in second place. All three of their gold medals were won by Kalu Ufiem in the 55kg weightlifting category. His standout lift of 94kg earned him top honors in all three events of that class.

The festival officially began on Sunday at the MKO Abiola International Stadium with performances from popular musicians, including David Adeleke and Asa. However, sporting activities had already kicked off earlier at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Sagamu, where weightlifting quickly became the most medal-rich sport in the early stages.

A new feature at this year’s event is the Invited Junior Athletes category, created to blend rising stars with experienced athletes. So far, the junior athletes have done well, sitting third on the table with two golds, one silver, and two bronze medals. Their success has largely been driven by Amarachi Chijioke, who won both of her golds in weightlifting.

Team Lagos is currently in fourth place, thanks to Ronke Olarinoye, who delivered the first gold medal of the festival in the women’s 45kg weightlifting category. Lagos has also picked up a bronze medal.

Bayelsa and Rivers are tied in fifth place, each earning two silver medals and one bronze. Team Oyo is in seventh place with one silver and one bronze, while Team Ekiti rounds out the standings with a single bronze from Monday’s weightlifting event.

This year’s festival features over 15,000 athletes competing in a wide variety of sports, with a total of 2,150 medals up for grabs across 549 events. The medal breakdown includes 626 golds, 626 silvers, and 898 bronzes, making this edition one of the biggest and most competitive in the history of the festival.
