It was a heartwarming family affair on Tuesday at the ongoing 2025 National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged ‘The Gateway Games’, as a mother and daughter duo lit up the weightlifting stage with impressive medal-winning performances for Lagos State.
Ronke Olarinoye, the mother, clinched both gold and silver medals in the 59kg women’s weight category, while her daughter, Florence Olarinoye, followed in her footsteps by securing silver medals in the 49kg weight class. Their joint triumph not only thrilled spectators but also underline the deep bond and shared passion between the two generations.
This wasn’t Ronke’s first moment of glory at the festival. She had earlier claimed gold in the women’s 45kg snatch event on the opening day, setting the tone for Lagos State’s strong showing in the weightlifting events.
Adding to Lagos State’s dominance in the sport, African Games gold medalist Omolola Onome Didih delivered a stellar performance by winning gold in both the snatch and total lifts in the 55kg women’s category.
The Olarinoyes’ shared success, combined with Didih’s victories, continues to boost Lagos State’s medal haul, making weightlifting one of the standout disciplines for the state at this year’s festival.
