FIFA Teams Up With Avalanche For New Blockchain Network
By Benjamin Abioye

FIFA, the global football authority, has announced a new partnership with Avalanche to build a dedicated blockchain system aimed at boosting fan interaction and enhancing digital collectibles for its estimated five billion supporters worldwide.
This move represents a step away from using multiple third-party platforms, as FIFA embraces a customized Layer-1 (L1) blockchain built specifically for its needs. Previously, FIFA had offered NFTs using the Algorand blockchain during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, this latest development marks a deeper and more committed adoption of blockchain technology.
According to the announcement, the new FIFA Blockchain will run on Avalanche’s architecture, which supports independent networks that maintain full control, offer high speed, and low delays. These networks can operate on their own but are still compatible with the broader Avalanche system and the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) standard.
As part of the transition, FIFA Collect—the organization’s existing NFT platform—will move to the new Avalanche-based blockchain. Fans will now access their collections through MetaMask or any EVM-compatible wallet that supports WalletConnect. This change means they will no longer use Algorand-specific wallets such as Pera or Defly.
This initiative also aligns with Avalanche’s recent Avalanche9000 upgrade, which was designed to encourage developers to create specialized Layer-1 blockchains.
In addition to FIFA Collect, the football body has been expanding its presence in blockchain. In November 2024, it introduced FIFA Rivals, a mobile soccer game developed in collaboration with Mythical Games.
FIFA’s consistent efforts in blockchain innovation show its strong confidence in the technology’s long-term value, even as the market for NFTs and digital assets experiences a slowdown.
Although FIFA has so far focused only on its NFT platform, the organization also mentioned that “future plans and business cases are planned but not yet publicly disclosed,” hinting at a broader Web3 strategy that could be unveiled soon.
