Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ehiogie West Idahosa (SAN), confirmed the court appearance on Sunday but noted it remains uncertain whether the Federal Government will proceed with her formal arraignment on the alleged defamation on that day.

The court charges were filed through the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mohammed Abubakar, and center on alleged defamation supposedly made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan during a live broadcast on Channels TV’s Politics Today on April 3, 2025, as well as during a private phone conversation on March 27, 2025.

Court documents submitted on May 16 at the Federal Capital Territory High Court allege that during the televised broadcast, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello of conspiring to have her killed. Specifically, she claimed that Akpabio and Bello discussed plans to eliminate her, with Bello purportedly emphasizing that she should be killed within Kogi State.

Additionally, Akpoti-Uduaghan is accused of making further inflammatory statements in a phone call with Dr. Sandra Duru, where she allegedly linked Senate President Akpabio to an organ harvesting scandal involving the late Iniubong Umoren, suggesting the act was for the benefit of Akpabio’s ailing wife.

Senate President Akpabio, Governor Bello, and four other witnesses are expected to testify against her in court.

Despite the gravity of the accusations, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer stated that she remains composed and prepared to face the legal process. Idahosa emphasized that the senator respects court procedures, is committed to abiding by court orders, and has no intention of evading justice.

When asked about the prospect of a formal arraignment on Tuesday, Idahosa disclosed that while their legal team has seen amended charges, they have not received full details. He assured that the defense team would respond appropriately to any developments in court.
