President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a ₦2 billion relief package to support the rebuilding of homes destroyed by recent floods in Mokwa, Niger State.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a visit to the flood-ravaged community, where he conveyed President Tinubu’s personal message of condolence and solidarity.

According to Shettima, the federal government will collaborate closely with the Niger State government to restore normalcy, noting that President Tinubu has directed urgent action from key ministries. “The Ministers of Environment and State for Agriculture have been instructed to immediately relocate to Niger State and address pressing challenges, especially drainage issues, under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project,” the Vice President disclosed.

To cushion the impact on affected families, 20 trucks loaded with food supplies have also been approved for immediate distribution. The exercise will be coordinated with the Village Head of Mokwa to ensure the aid reaches the most vulnerable.

Vice President Shettima commended the prompt response from Niger State Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba and the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Garba appreciated the support but emphasized the urgency of fixing four collapsed bridges, including the crucial Rabba route. He noted that several communities have been cut off, with students struggling to access their schools.

“Over 2,000 homes were destroyed in the floods, and most victims are now squatting with relatives and friends,” Garba said, adding that the state government is ready to provide land for permanent resettlement if required.

Also speaking during the visit, the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, appealed to the federal government to prioritize the completion of abandoned road projects in the region. These include the Mokwa bypass and critical highways connecting Bida, Patigi, and Kaduna. He also urged the deployment of an ecological team to tackle environmental degradation in the area.

Meanwhile, the Village Head of Mokwa, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the federal government for responding swiftly and standing by the people in their time of need.
