Shettima Mokwa Flood

Vice President Shettima visited flood-hit Mokwa, promising urgent federal help after over 200 deaths and massive damage in Niger State.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited Mokwa in Niger State after severe flooding hit the area.

The flood, which happened on May 29, 2025, has been called one of the worst disasters in the state’s history. More than 200 people lost their lives, over 500 households were affected, and about 3,000 people were forced to leave their homes. The flood also damaged important infrastructure, including three major bridges that were destroyed, making rescue and aid delivery difficult.

Upon arrival, Shettima was welcomed by state officials and immediately went to the flooded areas. He comforted the victims and promised that the Federal Government would quickly provide help. He said, “It is heartbreaking to see the destruction that this flood has caused. We are here to see things firsthand, to empathise with the families who have lost loved ones, and to assure you that the Federal Government will not abandon you in your time of need.”

Shettima assured that the government led by President Tinubu is committed to giving fast aid, such as food, shelter, and medical care. He also mentioned working with the state government to fix the damaged infrastructure. “This is not just a local tragedy; it is a national emergency. We will ensure that the victims receive the necessary support and that efforts are made to prevent future occurrences through improved flood management strategies,” he added.

He called on federal agencies to speed up the delivery of relief supplies and to start assessing the damage to roads, homes, and other important facilities so rebuilding can begin quickly.

State officials welcomed Shettima’s quick visit, saying it shows the Federal Government’s concern and readiness to help. The flood, caused by heavy rain over several days, has left many families homeless, destroyed farmland, washed away roads, and flooded entire communities in Mokwa Local Government Area.

Emergency teams have started giving out basic relief items, but officials say much more help is needed to support the thousands of people who are now homeless and in danger..
