A heartwarming yet thought-provoking moment unfolded during a recent road inspection in Abia State when Governor Alex Otti paused his convoy to interact with some children hawking by the roadside.

In a video making rounds on social media, governor Otti, who was inspecting the ongoing construction of the Tower-Onuimo Road in Umuahia, was seen engaging the children in conversation. With genuine curiosity and concern, he asked them if they were attending school, to which they all responded affirmatively.

Governor Otti further inquired whether they paid school fees, and the children chorused, “No,” indicating that their education is part of the state’s free basic education initiative.

The brief but impactful exchange has drawn mixed reactions online, with many commending the governor for showing interest in the welfare of underprivileged children, while others expressed concern over the continued presence of child hawkers during school hours.

@princeendee: The best thing to ever happen to Abians

@nsisong: He’s actually loved by his people. I like him too.

@drizu: Few leaders demonstrate the passion and integrity that Dr. Alex embodies. He is pragmatic, transparent, and consistently accountable. A true example of leadership worth emulating.

Governor Otti’s administration has made education reform a central pillar of its governance agenda, including promises to improve access to quality education and reduce the number of out-of-school children in Abia State.
