Plateau Takes Bold Stance On Climate Change
By Marie-Therese Nanlong

To achieve environmental sustainability, Plateau State has inaugurated a 40-member Climate Assembly to spearhead the implementation of its Climate Change Policy, aimed at combating the intensifying effects of climate change in the State.
The inauguration ceremony, hosted by the State Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development in collaboration with climate-focused partners, marks a historic milestone as the Plateau State Climate Assembly (PSCA) becomes the first of its kind in Nigeria.
The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Samuel Jatau, officially commissioned the Assembly on Monday, urging members to champion policies that will protect the environment and secure the future of Plateau communities.
He called for urgent grassroots action, particularly among the youths, to address the environmental threats facing the State.
“The climate crisis is real. It requires more than surface-level interventions,” Jatau said. “You must craft sustainable, community-based strategies that reach even the most vulnerable areas where climate literacy is low and environmental degradation is high.”
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development, Mr. Peter Gwom, warned that erratic rainfall patterns and rising pest infestations are clear signs of environmental stress.
He described the Assembly’s creation as a pioneering initiative and a replicable model for other States.
“Our global ecosystem is in disarray,” Gwom said. “We are witnessing alarming losses in biodiversity. The PSCA is not just a committee, it’s a vital force for lasting environmental change.”
Since taking office, the State government has rolled out numerous climate adaptation measures including water harvesting systems, afforestation drives, land restoration efforts, the construction of dams, and protective fencing for wildlife conservation.
With the Climate Assembly now operational, expectations are high that Plateau State will lead by example in climate governance, not just within Nigeria, but across the African continent.
