Mocking PDP, Tinubu Tells Wike To Take His Time On Defection
By Benjamin Abioye

President Tinubu has said that Nyesom Wike would be warmly welcomed into the APC anytime he chooses to officially dump the PDP underscoring the low political fortunes of the opposition party.
President Bola Tinubu has said that he is ready to welcome the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, into the All Progressives Congress (APC) whenever he decides to join the party officially.
While commissioning the Arterial Road N16 and other infrastructure in the Katampe area of Abuja, Tinubu praised Wike for his role in governance and jokingly referred to one of Wike’s popular songs from past political rallies. He said, “We have somebody—Nyesom Wike—he is not a member of my party (APC), not yet. But the day he changes his mind and registers with the progressives, we will welcome him. Because we will enjoy singing ‘as e dey pain dem, e dey sweet us.’” The statement made many in the crowd laugh, including Wike himself, showing a warm relationship between both leaders.
Wike, who is still a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), caused much political debate after he openly supported Tinubu during the 2023 general election. Despite losing the PDP presidential primary in 2022 and refusing to back the party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Wike continued to play an active role in national politics. After Tinubu’s victory, Wike accepted the role of Minister of the FCT under the APC government in August 2023, which increased tensions within the PDP.
His continued alliance with President Tinubu has made him a central figure in discussions about future political alignments. Wike recently pledged his full support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, saying, “I am a key asset. I will lead President Tinubu’s re-election campaign in Rivers State.”
Wike’s actions have led to mixed reactions, especially from key figures within the PDP. Many see his behavior as a betrayal of party loyalty, while others believe he is simply choosing the path that best fits his political goals.
On Monday, Wike again drew attention when he called for the PDP to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. Speaking on behalf of a group called the “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP” after a consultative meeting, he called for fairness and inclusiveness. The group also insisted that only the National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, has the authority to send out notices for national party meetings.
Wike remains a powerful voice within the PDP, but his closeness to the APC and President Tinubu continues to reshape conversations about the future of both parties.
