Democracy Day: Edo PDP Calls For Unity, Hope, And Action
By Benjamin Abioye

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the PDP in Edo State has sent a strong message of hope, unity, and accountability, pledging to defend the people’s voice and demand real progress.
As Nigeria marks Democracy Day on June 12, the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a heartfelt message to citizens of the state, calling for unity, resilience, and a renewed hope for a better tomorrow.
In a statement signed by Bob-Manuel Umoru, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP Edo State Caretaker Committee, the party paid tribute to the legacy of the June 12, 1993 presidential election — widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. Despite its annulment, the election remains a symbol of Nigerians’ enduring belief in democracy and the power of their collective voice.
“Today, as we join fellow Nigerians in commemorating Democracy Day, we pause to reflect on the historic June 12, 1993 election—an election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in our nation’s history. Though annulled, it remains a powerful symbol of the Nigerian people’s resolve and belief in the power of their voice,” the statement read.
The party extended warm greetings to the people of Edo State, acknowledging the socio-economic challenges many are currently facing. “We are fully aware of the pains and burdens that so many of our citizens carry today. We see the challenges in our economy, the hardship in our markets, the cries of our youths for opportunities, and the yearning of our people for a government that truly cares,” Umoru noted.
Positioning itself as a constructive opposition force, the Edo PDP reiterated its commitment to holding the ruling party accountable and speaking up for the everyday citizen.
“As the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), now in opposition, our role is clear: we will not relent in putting the ruling party on its toes. We will continue to engage constructively, speak up boldly, and demand accountability from those in power. Governance must not be about promises alone—it must be about action that brings relief, development, and prosperity to the people,” the party stated.
Emphasizing the party’s dedication to the values of democracy and inclusive governance, the PDP assured the people of Edo that it remains steadfast in advocating for their rights and interests. “We reaffirm our commitment to the Edo people to stand with you, to echo your concerns, and to be a strong and responsible opposition that speaks for the voiceless and defends the dreams of the common man,” the message continued.
The party also expressed optimism about returning to power in the state, pledging to deliver tangible democratic dividends when given the mandate once again. “We believe in Edo. And we believe sooner or later we shall together restore our Party back to government to deliver unhindered dividends of democracy to our people,” Umoru added.
The message concluded with a rallying call for unity and faith in a brighter future: “Let us remain resolute and hopeful of a better tomorrow. Let us stay united. Edo will be Great Again. Happy Democracy Day!”
