Meta Adds Monetization Tools To WhatsApp Updates Tab
By Benjamin Abioye

Meta unveiled monetization tools on WhatsApp, allowing creators and businesses to earn via Channel Subscriptions, targeted Ads in Status, and Promoted Channels.
Meta has introduced new monetization features on WhatsApp’s Updates tab to help creators, organizations, and businesses grow their presence and earn income through the app.
The Updates tab, which already includes Status and Channels, will now have three additions: Channel Subscriptions, Promoted Channels, and Ads in Status. These features are designed to support creators and businesses while keeping user experience smooth.
“We’ve been talking for years about how to build a business on WhatsApp in a way that doesn’t interrupt personal chats. We believe the Updates tab is the right place to introduce that,” Meta said.
According to the company, over 1.5 billion people use the Updates tab every day to check Status updates or follow Channels. Meta sees this as a major opportunity to help businesses grow.
With Channel Subscriptions, users can now pay a monthly fee to get exclusive content from their favorite creators, news pages, or sports teams.
Promoted Channels will allow WhatsApp to recommend new Channels to users based on their interests. This gives creators and businesses a way to boost their visibility on the app through paid promotions.
For Ads in Status, businesses can place targeted ads inside Status updates, much like what users already see in Instagram Stories. This allows potential customers to see ads, learn about products, and message businesses directly.
Meta stressed that user privacy remains protected, even with the new monetization tools.
“Your personal messages, calls, and groups remain end-to-end encrypted, and that includes your Status updates. We’ll never sell or share your phone number with advertisers,” Meta assured.
They further explained that only limited information will be used to show ads, such as your country, city, language, and the Channels you follow. For users who have connected their WhatsApp to “Meta’s Accounts Center, ad preferences from other Meta apps might be used too.
“To show ads in Status or Channels you might care about, we’ll use limited info like your country or city, language, the Channels you’re following, and how you interact with the ads you see.
“For people who have chosen to add WhatsApp to Accounts Center, we’ll also use your ad preferences and info from across your Meta accounts.
“We will never sell or share your phone number to advertisers. Your personal messages, calls, and groups you are in will not be used to determine the ads you may see,” the company stated.
These new features will roll out gradually over the coming months. Businesses and channel owners who are interested can find more details through official WhatsApp Business support channels.
