Pope, Leo XIV

Pope Leo has expressed deep sorrow over the recent massacre in Benue State, Nigeria, where more than 200 people were reportedly killed in a brutal attack on the Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area.

Speaking during his Sunday Angelus at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo described the Benue incident as a “terrible massacre” and extended heartfelt prayers for the victims and their grieving families. He noted that many of the dead were internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had sought refuge at a Catholic mission, making the attack particularly tragic.

“I am praying for security, justice, and peace in Nigeria,” Pope Leo declared. “In a special way, I am thinking of the rural Christian communities of Benue State, who have been relentless victims of violence.”

The Pope’s remarks have drawn global attention to the worsening security crisis in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where attacks on vulnerable communities have become alarmingly frequent. His comments come amid growing outrage and calls for action from both local and international observers who say the Nigerian government must do more to protect its citizens.

Church leaders in Nigeria have also condemned the violence, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further bloodshed.
