Omoni Oboli has said that Nollywood produced more original stories than Hollywood, which often focuses on remakes and profits.

Actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli has said that Nollywood tells more original stories than Hollywood.

She made this statement during an interview on Rubbin’ Minds, where she spoke about storytelling styles in both film industries.

“I think we do have a lot more original stories than even Hollywood,” she said.

Omoni explained that Hollywood relies heavily on remakes, sequels, and reboots, while Nigerian filmmakers are still exploring new ideas. “Hollywood is doing a lot of remakes and reboots and sequels. And I understand it. It’s the economics. It’s a business. For them, it’s a business,” she added.

She acknowledged that Nollywood also produces remakes, mentioning films like Living in Bondage and Nneka the Pretty Serpent. However, she stressed that original stories still dominate in Nigeria’s movie industry.

“We do remakes as well. We had Living in Bondage and Nneka the Pretty Serpent. We have a few remakes, but I think that we still do a lot more original stories than even the West,” she said.

Omoni also pointed out that Hollywood studios often focus on what will be profitable, rather than new ideas. “They’re like, ‘What’s going to make money?’ and then they go with that. They go with what has worked before,” she said.

Omoni Oboli, who is known for films like Being Mrs. Elliott, Okafor’s Law, and Wives on Strike, remains one of the leading voices in Nollywood.
