Acclaimed musician, Adekunle Gold has unveiled 5 Star Care, a health insurance programme providing free coverage to 1,000 Lagos residents living with sickle cell disease.
Nigerian Afrobeats musician and humanitarian, Adekunle Gold, has launched a new health insurance project called 5 Star Care.
The program will provide free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell disease in Lagos State.
The singer, whose real name is Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko, shared the news in an emotional video posted on Instagram to mark World Sickle Cell Day. He explained that the project is personal because he has lived with sickle cell disease his entire life.
In his words, “We’re starting small by providing free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Lagos State. But this is only the beginning.” He said the aim is to make sure that “sickle cell warriors are seen, heard, and cared for.”
Adekunle Gold has always spoken openly about his condition. His 2022 song “5 Star” revealed some of the struggles he has faced. While he admitted that going public about his health led to some bullying, it also gave him the courage to raise awareness.
“This is only the beginning,” he added, promising that the initiative will grow beyond Lagos.
His organization, the Adekunle Gold Foundation, has already helped many people by offering medical support. But this new insurance project is different — it focuses on long-term care instead of just short-term help.
Adekunle also spoke about the need for better healthcare policies in Nigeria. He pointed out that countries like the UK and Canada have clear systems in place for sickle cell patients, and he hopes Nigeria can follow that path.
Through 5 Star Care, he plans to give more than just medical treatment. The goal is to give people living with sickle cell a sense of dignity, support, and hope for the future.
Supporters of the initiative have called it a “life-changing” effort. The pilot phase in Lagos is expected to serve as a model for similar programs in other parts of Nigeria.
