A Nigerian doctor has raised the alarm over rising rates of HIV infections in Abuja and Lagos, urging citizens to take personal responsibility and seek regular testing.
In the now-trending video shared across social media platforms, the doctor, speaking with urgency and clarity, revealed disturbing statistics she encountered at a recent medical symposium, warning that the HIV crisis in Nigeria’s major cities is escalating beyond control.
“This is advice from me,” she began, addressing viewers with a serious tone. “If you’re in any sexual relationship with someone, please go to the hospital and test. We are driving against HIV.”
According to the doctor, HIV positivity rates have jumped from about 50% in 2019–2020 to over 75% among certain test groups. She emphasized that “1 in every 10 people now have HIV,” particularly in Abuja and Lagos, the country’s two largest urban centers. This revelation has shocked many Nigerians.
Sharing her experience at the medical conference, she described the gathering as a symposium of healthcare professionals, where updated data on HIV prevalence was presented. The numbers, she said, were “overwhelming” and serve as a wake-up call to the public.
While advocating for protection during sexual activity, the doctor also admitted the limitations of condoms and other preventive measures, especially when partners are not transparent.
“It doesn’t matter if that person is your husband or wife,” she said bluntly. “If your husband can have side chicks, your wife can have side niggas. Don’t assume loyalty — get tested.”
Her message was clear: go to the nearest laboratory and test for HIV. She stressed the importance of early detection, explaining that it could take three to four months after exposure for the virus to show up in test results — a period commonly known as the HIV window period.
“You’ll have to test again after three months,” she advised, emphasizing the need for follow-up screening to ensure accuracy.
