IGP Answers Tinubu’s Questions On Why No One Was Arrested Over Benue Killings
By Benjamin Abioye

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed the arrest of 26 people in connection with the deadly attack on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to him, the assault claimed the lives of 47 villagers, while police officers killed two of the attackers. More than 100 residents were displaced by the violence.
The police chief revealed this on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, during a press briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. He stated that most of the suspects were arrested on Saturday, June 22, 2025.
In addition, he disclosed that 22 suspects were apprehended over the killing of 12 travellers in Plateau State, while five others were arrested in connection with the murder of two people in Benue State earlier in the week.
These developments come shortly after President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate arrest of those behind the brutal killing of over 100 people in the Yelewata area.
During a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Makurdi, the President questioned the delay in the arrests. Addressing the Inspector General directly, he said: “How come no one has been arrested for committing this heinous crime in Yelewata. Inspector General of Police, where are the arrests? The criminals must be arrested immediately.”
President Tinubu was accompanied by top officials including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, traditional rulers, and former governors of the state.
He also directed the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to increase surveillance and gather intelligence to help track down those responsible.
