Full List Of 110 Groups Seeking Party Registration
By Benjamin Abioye

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has said that 110 groups have sent in letters asking to be registered as political parties. This is in preparation for the 2027 general election.
He made this known on Wednesday during a meeting held in Abuja with media executives. According to him, all the requests are being carefully reviewed based on existing electoral laws and INEC’s official guidelines.
“As of Monday, 23rd June 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations that wish to register as political parties. We are diligently processing the requests in line with the procedure outlined in the law as well as our Regulations and Guidelines,” he said.
Yakubu added that the commission had already acknowledged most of these letters. “We have acknowledged all requests received so far except six of them received recently which will be done before the end of the week,” he explained.
He addressed concerns about fairness and transparency. “We will treat all requests fairly irrespective of the status of their promoters, be they ordinary or prominent citizens,” Yakubu assured, while rejecting claims that INEC was losing its independence. He recalled that similar false claims were made against the commission in 2013.
He also shared that the handbook containing the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties can be accessed online. He said the commission would soon release a full list of all 110 associations, including their names, short forms, offices, and names of their temporary leaders. This list will be available on INEC’s website and social media platforms.
On other electoral matters, Yakubu said INEC is ready to hold pending by-elections and continue the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide. “I am glad to announce that the Commission is now in a position to conduct the bye-elections and to resume the nationwide CVR,” he said.
He stated that plans for both activities were being finalized and the public would get full details within 24 hours. “The commission met yesterday and we are finalising the details of the two activities which will be made public in the next 24 hours,” he added.
He ended by appreciating the media and asking for their continued cooperation. “We look forward to your support,” Yakubu said.
The meeting also addressed ongoing election preparations. Yakubu mentioned that party primaries for Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were currently happening and would end by June 30, 2025. He explained that elections would take place in 68 areas, including Chairmen and Deputies across six Area Councils and 62 wards.
“As you are aware, the election will be held in 68 constituencies made up of Chairmen and their Deputies for the six Area Councils, namely Abaji, the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali as well as 62 Wards drawn on the basis of 10 Wards for each Area Council, except AMAC which has 12 Wards on account of its population. The full delimitation details for the FCT are available on our website,” he explained.
He also spoke about the Anambra State Governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. Campaigning has already started and will end on November 6. Yakubu encouraged media organisations to apply for election coverage. “I wish to appeal to you to promptly upload your applications for accreditation of media personnel for the Anambra State governorship election as soon as the portal opens,” he said.
