In his remarks, ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi said key opposition leaders like Atiku, Obi, and El-Rufai remain in their parties for now due to ongoing electoral commitments.

The spokesman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has explained why some top opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai, have not officially left their parties despite aligning with the ADC coalition.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Thursday, Abdullahi said these political figures had been involved in ongoing electoral processes to take place before the 2027 general elections. He used El-Rufai as an example, noting that the former governor and his group are actively supporting candidates under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and have even purchased nomination forms for them for elections to take place before 2027.

“There are elections taking place before 2027 that these parties are engaged in, that people like Mallam Nasir El-Rufai have his group engaged in. So they have bought forms on the platform of those parties,” Abdullahi said.

He added, “So it is only sensible that you allow them to contest… on the grounds of those parties. And when they are done with that… everybody in principle is in ADC.”

Abdullahi emphasized that, despite their current affiliations, the politicians share a united mission — to prevent Nigeria from slipping into what he described as a “one-party civilian dictatorship.”

“It is clear what we are doing is very clear to us. Every single person that believes that Nigeria cannot be reduced to a one-party state is in this coalition,” he said.

“If anyone has problems with that, that we should watch and allow Nigeria to become a one-party civilian dictatorship, then they can begin to throw up all this.”

Looking ahead to 2027, the former minister admitted the road would not be easy, but said the team is prepared.

“We do not think it will be a smooth ride. We think it will be bumpy, but we are ready to deal with it,” he concluded.
