Court Finds Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Guilty, Orders Apology To Akpabio
By Gideon Ayeni
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has found suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, guilty of contempt of court over a satirical Facebook post directed at Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Justice Binta Nyako, who delivered the ruling on Friday, July 4, held that the lawmaker violated an earlier gag order by mocking the court through a post shared on April 7. In the post, Senator Natasha made a sarcastic apology to Akpabio despite a standing order that barred both parties from making public comments on the ongoing legal dispute.
The court described the post as a deliberate act of disobedience and ordered the senator to issue a fresh, sincere apology. The apology must be published in two national dailies and reposted on her Facebook page within seven days. Justice Nyako also imposed a N5 million fine on the lawmaker.
The contempt proceedings were initiated by Senate President Akpabio. However, the court declined to grant him any personal relief outside of the ruling on contempt.
Meanwhile, the court is still expected to deliver judgment on the substantive suit filed by Senator Natasha, in which she is challenging her six-month suspension from the Senate.
