The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Peter Rufai, affectionately known as Dodo Mayana. Widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, Rufai’s passing has drawn tributes from across the country and beyond.

In an official statement released on Thursday and signed by Bolaji Abdullahi, the Spokesperson of the ADC, the party described Rufai as “a true legend of Nigerian football” and “a symbol of national pride.”

“As a giant of African football, Peter Rufai exemplified the brilliance, courage, and determination of the Nigerian spirit,” said Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC National Spokesperson. “On the field, he was not just a player — he was a symbol of pride for an entire nation.”

Rufai, who served as the Super Eagles’ number one goalkeeper during some of the most memorable moments in Nigerian football history, was remembered for his commitment, grace, and unmatched skill.

“With every save, every kick of the ball, and every opportunity he had to play, Rufai represented Nigeria and the Super Eagles with unmatched passion, skill, and grace,” the statement noted.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary also reflected on Rufai’s enduring impact on both sport and society. “Today, as we celebrate his remarkable life, we also mourn the passing of a man and a legend whose love for the beautiful game and deep devotion to his country inspired generations,” he said. “He leaves behind an indelible mark on the history of Nigerian football.”

Beyond his talent on the pitch, Rufai was seen as a symbol of unity in a country rich in diversity. “In times when sports provided hope and brought Nigerians together across all divides, he stood as a beacon of excellence and dignity,” the spokesperson added.

The ADC extended heartfelt condolences to Rufai’s family, loved ones, the entire Nigerian football community, and everyone who was touched by his life and legacy.

“May his memory continue to inspire future generations to strive, to serve, and to shine — just as he did,” the party concluded.

Peter Rufai’s contribution to Nigerian football remains unforgettable. He will be remembered not only as a sportsman but as a national hero who carried the hopes of millions with honor.
