The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has summoned Comfort Emmanson, Juliana Edward, and other members of Ibom Air’s cabin crew for further questioning over the August 10 incident where the passenger dragged off near naked from the plane in Lagos.

The summons came as it emerged that the pilot of the Uyo-Lagos flight disclosed that the incident between Emmanson and the Ibom Air hostess had been resolved before takeoff in Uyo. The disclosure that the issue had been resolved has put new focus on the air hostess for possibly triggering the fracas that occurred on landing.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, confirmed the development on Tuesday during the Emergency National Civil Aviation Security Committee and Stakeholders’ Meeting in Abuja. Responding to questions after his presentation, he said the Authority had already spoken with Emmanson earlier on Tuesday. She and her colleagues are scheduled to appear before NCAA on Wednesday for continued investigation.

“I have spoken with Ms. Emmanson this morning. We are also inviting the Ibom Air cabin crew for continued investigation on the incident. They will be here tomorrow,” Achimugu said.

He explained that the pilot-in-command did not immediately call in security after landing in Lagos because the matter seemed to have been resolved before departure from Uyo. However, Emmanson, who visited the restroom after touchdown, was the last passenger to disembark, which brought more attention to the incident.

Achimugu assured stakeholders that NCAA would conduct a thorough probe to establish all facts surrounding the case, which has sparked wide public debate.

Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, also spoke at the meeting. He highlighted that poor discipline among air travelers and lapses in professional conduct among airport workers and crew members have contributed to rising unruly behavior in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

While noting that some industry players deliberately violate existing rules, Abdulfatai commended NCAA for enforcing regulatory standards and urged other aviation agencies to support the Authority’s efforts in safeguarding the industry.
