NCAA Orders Ibom Air To Compensate Passengers After Flight Cancellation
By Benjamin Abioye
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has instructed Ibom Air to compensate passengers whose travel plans were affected by a flight cancellation on Friday, September 5, 2025.
The decision came after travellers complained on social media about the handling of the flight. The flight, originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m., was first delayed to 5:20 p.m., and passengers were later asked to collect their luggages.
NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, explained that the disruption was caused by a technical fault on the aircraft assigned to the route that day. He described the situation as force majeure and said the fault also affected other flights using the same plane.
He said Ibom Air had provided hotel accommodation to some of the stranded passengers and would email all affected travellers offering 25 per cent compensation.
He added, “Airlines face sanctions only when they fail to comply with Part 19 of the NCAA regulations, which require care for passengers during disruptions.”
According to Achimugu, Ibom Air fulfilled that obligation and continues to be one of the country’s most punctual carriers. He also emphasized that safety is the top priority, noting, “Nigeria’s airspace remains secure because aircraft are not cleared for operation once any risk is detected.”
