Tinubu’s European Vacation: APC Slams ‘Professional Complainer’ Peter Obi
The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, following his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s recent vacation abroad.
GWG.ng reports that the APC reaction came after President Tinubu departed Abuja on Thursday for a 10-day working vacation in Europe as part of his 2025 annual leave.
Obi, who has consistently criticised the president’s handling of Nigeria’s economic and security crises, expressed strong reservations about Tinubu’s trip, saying the president’s frequent foreign travels portray him as a leader uncomfortable in his own country at a time when Nigerians desperately need his presence to confront mounting challenges.
In response, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Seye Oladejo, in a statement on Saturday, accused Obi of opportunism and constant meddling in national affairs following his latest statement condemning Tinubu’s decision to go on vacation in Europe.
Oladejo said: “The APC notes with growing bewilderment the increasingly opportunistic commentary that has become Obi’s political trademark. His latest remark—questioning President Tinubu’s private vacation and carelessly linking it to the nation’s security situation—is yet another example of his compulsive tendency to insert himself into every national conversation, regardless of relevance, accuracy, or basic decorum. Must Peter Obi comment on everything or anything?”
The APC spokesman maintained that President Tinubu, like any responsible leader, remained fully briefed and in active communication with his security and intelligence teams, even while on a short vacation.
“Governance does not grind to a halt simply because a leader takes time to rest—especially in an age of secure, real-time communication. Mr. Obi knows this, but evidently prefers posturing over pragmatism,” Oladejo said.
He further argued that Obi’s constant moralising over every presidential action smacked less of patriotism and more of a desperate grasp for relevance. “In trying to cast himself as the nation’s conscience, he cheapens governance and reduces complex issues to sound bites,” Oladejo added.
According to him, Obi appears to believe his relevance lies in reacting to every government move—regardless of context or consequence. “It is time for Mr. Obi’s handlers to pay closer attention to their principal—for his own wellbeing and public perception. A statesman cannot afford to sound perpetually agitated, misinformed, or out of touch with the responsibilities of leadership in a modern democracy,” he noted.
Oladejo stressed that while the Tinubu administration is working round the clock to rebuild the economy, secure the nation, and restore public confidence, Obi has offered little beyond “sermons, sound bites, and complaints.”
“No policies, no proposals—just perpetual complaints. This is not leadership. This is not patriotism. This is noise,” he declared.
The APC spokesman urged Obi to exercise restraint and avoid undermining national discourse “with knee-jerk statements crafted for social media applause.”
“Nigeria needs a credible, constructive opposition—not a professional complainer. If Obi has meaningful contributions to make, let him present them thoughtfully and responsibly. Otherwise, silence is the more honourable option,” Oladejo added.
He concluded that under Tinubu’s leadership, the APC remained focused on the serious business of governance, not “the daily theatre of political opportunists.”
