By Benjamin Abioye
Seventeen countries have now officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Fans are excited as this will be the first tournament ever to be hosted together by three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The North American hosts earned automatic qualification, setting the stage for a unique global event across many cities.
In Asia, Japan was the first team to qualify on March 20, 2025, followed by Iran five days later. New Zealand secured Oceania’s only guaranteed spot on March 24 with a 3–0 win over New Caledonia.
Other Asian countries that have qualified include Jordan, South Korea, Uzbekistan, and Australia, who confirmed their place on June 5.
South America has strong representation as usual. Argentina qualified after a decisive draw between Uruguay and Bolivia in March. By June, Brazil and Ecuador also secured their spots. Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia joined in early September, bringing the total from the continent to six teams.
