Tragedy struck on Wednesday, September 10, as 31-year-old conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot dead while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, a staunch ally of former U.S. president Donald Trump, was known nationwide for his fiery political commentary and outdoor debates on college campuses. He was in the middle of a campus event when the fatal shot rang out, sparking chaos and panic among attendees.

According to reports, the shot was fired from an academic building about 100–200 yards away. Police immediately launched a manhunt, going “building to building” to evacuate people. A suspect was briefly taken into custody but later released.

President Donald Trump, visibly shaken by the news, announced that American flags would be flown at half-mast until Sunday evening in honor of Kirk. “In honor of Charlie Kirk, a truly Great American Patriot, I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Sunday evening at 6 P.M.,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Kirk’s wife and two young children were reportedly on campus during the incident, according to a U.S. senator.

Adding a haunting twist, old tweets by Kirk have resurfaced in the wake of his death. In one, he mocked President Joe Biden’s push for stricter gun laws:

“Joe Biden wants to ban ‘magazines that hold multiple bullets.’ That would ban nearly every gun in America including a majority of pistols. These are the people coming for your guns: Zero understanding of how they work but never in doubt of their views.”

Another video resurfaced and went viral in which he said that gun violence was a necessary price to pay for protecting Second Amendment rights in 2023.

As tributes pour in from political allies, students, and fellow conservatives, many online are drawing attention to the irony of Kirk’s stance on gun control in light of his death by gunfire.
